Frequently Asked Questions

What You Need to Know

What are your open hours?

Our artists work by appointment 7 days a week, so hours vary. Please fill out the form on our contact page to set up a time with one of the artists.

Do you take walk-ins?

Most of the artist at Empire Studio RI work primarily by appointment only. However, we are not a no walk-in shop. At the discretion of the artist, we would be happy to take you in time permitted. If there are no artists available, we are always willing to do a quick consultation and help you set up an appointment for a future date.

How do I schedule an appointment?

We here at Empire Studio RI take pride in the work that we do as well as the artist/client relationship. That said, it is extremely important for any and all consultations to be done in person and in house. This allows the artists to truly grasp any concepts you may have as well as properly analyze any reference artwork you bring in. We do not schedule appointments via social media as it is not possible to accurately quote a price over the internet. If you would like to schedule a consultation you can do so by either clicking the consultation link on the homepage, or by coming in for a walk-in consultation. ( We understand that not all of our clients may have the ability to come in for an in person consultation. For those who are out of state we ask that you specify this in your consultation request along with a contact number and we will work with you to find an alternative.)  A minimum deposit of $40.00 is required at the date of your consultation and will be applied to the total cost of your tattoo. This deposit is non refundable and is used to lock in your appointment date.

Can I bring a friend?

We understand that getting a new tattoo can be an exciting experience for you and you may feel inclined to bring a few of your friends along for the ride. However, We ask that you limit this to one person. We are not the largest shop  and share a common work space.  Please note that having your friend sit next to you during your session is at the discretion of your artist and is space permitted. Otherwise they will need to wait in the designated waiting area for the duration of your appointment.  Please refrain from bringing small children with you both for the consultation as well as your appointment. Any person under the age of 18 in not permitted inside the building.

What will my tattoo cost?

Each artist prices their work independently. Your artist will discuss pricing with you at the consultation.

How do I pay for my tattoo

We accept cash and credit/debit card payments. We also accept payments via Cashapp, Venmo, and all other major payment service applications. We do not accept checks. All credit/debit payments are subject to a transaction fee of up to 4%.

Should I tip my tattoo artist?

Tipping your artist is not mandatory or expected however is very much appreciated. If you had a good experience and are happy with your new artwork and can afford it, then feel free to do so.  Your artist will not say no to a tip. And will thank you greatly for it.

I am allergic to latex. Can I still get tattooed?

Yes. All of the artists at Empire Studio RI use nitrile hypoallergenic gloves. We ask that you mention any allergies you may have when you come in so that the artist is aware and proactive throughout the duration of your appointment.

How old do I need to be to get a tattoo?

In compliance with Rhode Island state law and the Rhode Island department of health; you must be at least 18 years of age with a valid photo ID (license, state ID, passport). Any shop that agrees to tattoo a minor is doing so illegally. Please note that we will refuse service to anyone without proper photo identification as a photocopy will need to be made for records.

I am pregnant, can I get a tattoo?

Unfortunately not. Although we here at Empire Studio RI take the upmost precaution in ensuring you have a safe sterile experience, we cannot control what your art is exposed to once you leave us. We cannot risk a possibility of infection for you or your child and thus will refuse any service to expecting mothers.

Can I drink before getting a tattoo?

It is not advised. Alcohol as well as some medications may thin out your blood causing the application of the tattoo as well as the healing process afterwards to be more susceptible to complications. Please note that we will not tattoo any persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol. No Exceptions.

Do you offer body piercing?

We do not offer body piercing services at this time.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

It is recommended you come to your appointment well rested, well fed, showered, and wearing appropriate clothing if applicable (loose fitting). A good nights sleep and a full belly will help you out tremendously and you want to be sure your skin is clean and free of any dirt or oils. There is also the possibility of your clothes getting dirty and we can tell you first hand that once the ink gets on your shirt, shoes, or pants, its not likely to come out so plan ahead. Do not consume any drugs or alcohol before your appointment as we will refuse service if you are showing signs of being under the influence in any way. Your artist may instruct you to follow an extra step or two in preparation for your specific artwork during the consultation.

How do I care for my new tattoo?

Your artist will walk you through the steps you will need to take to care for your tattoo to ensure proper healing at the date of your appointment and after they have wrapped you up.
